Pith & Wind - Mad Men
Maria and I have been watching quite a few made-for-TV
series of late. Borgen, The Legacy, The Killing,
The Tunnel, The Bridge to name a few mostly
Scandinavian efforts. Currently we’re trying
to fathom where the Arctic-looking Fortitude
might be heading and have even dipped into the
English detective series Grantchester,
although so far it doesn’t seem to quite
be our style.
Because we’re latecomers to the series’
genre we’re having some fun catching up
with some of the more established titles, some
of them years old. We duly caught up with and
were impressed by the American version of House
of Cards (and are now waiting breathlessly
for the new series), but the really old news is
that we’ve latched onto Mad Men.
We’re so far behind we skipped the first
four series entirely and dropped in on series
5. We’re currently recording series 7 while
we bone up on series 6, courtesy of eBay. (This
episode-jumping can get confusing and I’ve
already accidentally erased two of the series
7 shows).
I always suspected Mad Men might be addictive,
of course – it’s a much-lauded and
awarded show so there had to be something going
for it. Perhaps because we missed the earlier
series we’ve had a lot of fun trying to
work out just where the characters are coming
from. Oddly enough, it’s taken till now
to work out that the title says it all –
most, if not all the male characters are certifiable
or more than a just bit weird. read

Dick's
Toolbox - The truth..
Among many things that have
eluded my understanding is the application of
the interlinked ideas of truth, honesty and responsibility
as revealed through the history of our, or other
societies. It is a general assumption of the old
that these are the worst of times when in fact
they are generally the best but I have the more
than nagging suspicion that these common virtues
are regarded as foreign ideas of that can be donned
and discarded much as the fashions change or the
seasons vary. To be more succinct they only apply
when expedient.
I have my own definite ideas about what these
three virtues are and how they should be revealed
through our actions but I am not sure that my
concept correlates with a large portion of the
rest of the world. Most especially are revealed
through the media - that interminable moraine
of words, pictures and detritus spreading over
the human landscape like a oil shale landslide
across the pristine landscape of Canada. read
