20 Feet from Stardom
I’ve just texted Petrina to say that the
DVD she kindly lent me is on its way back to Video
Ezy in Kew per Australia Post. Given the recent
escalation in that organisation’s charges
it actually might’ve been cheaper to drive
there and deliver it personally, but that’s
another story and anyway I didn’t have the
time.
The DVD in question is 20 Feet from Stardom
and it’s been recommended to me by no less
than David and Margaret and a veritable host of
others in the course of idle chit-chat. Anyway,
I gather it’s been pretty popular because
to my knowledge they haven’t shown it on
Foxtel yet, so I was pleased to have the opportunity
to see it.
I was struck by the irony on the DVD’s jacket
before even taking the disc out and popping it
into the DVD player. No mention of the artists
in question – instead it proclaims to the
hesitant buyer or renter, ‘Featuring Bruce
Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder
and Bette Midler’.
OK. So Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton,
Lisa Fischer, Táta Vega and Jo Lawry aren’t
household names, but it’s a documentary
about them so perhaps they might’ve expected
their names would be included on the cover art?
Or perhaps not. After watching the doco you discover
that some of these gals have a positive talent
for being exploited. The name Phil Spector features
a bit too often, especially in the case of Darlene..

Toolbox - No Solace in Quanta
This festive month I was
going to write a simple explanation of quantum
physics – but of course there isn’t
one – at least that I can find. An intellectual
Christmas present for my solitary reader will
have to be delayed for yet another year. There
are complex explanations of quantum phenomena
but, even after reading books targeted at the
‘intelligent’ reader, I find myself
more than a little baffled. Alright – extremely
baffled. I suspect that I don’t have the
mathematics to understand something that can really
only be understood mathematically, and not just
comprehended in terms of an of an artist’s
mental image. For some reason I find it irritating
to not have the brainpower or the tools to understand
the workings of the world at the sub-atomic level.
In the world of science fiction I can happily
accept the idea of multiverses but somehow in
the ‘real’ Newtonian world we conceptually
operate in, I find it difficult to accept either
intuitively or as a fact.
