Mike's
Pith & Wind - Science Fiction
I’ve
been an SF nut since, well, I can’t quite
remember when. I know I was regularly reading
the Analog Science Fact & Fiction
(as it was back then) magazine when I must’ve
been only ten or eleven. In my early teens I not
only read the SF&F magazine voraciously,
I read real SF books as well, like Isaac Asimov’s
Foundation series and Robert A Heinlein
and Arthur C Clark novels and I think Dick was
similarly inclined. (Mind you, I enjoyed reading
Mad magazine and short horror stories too, but
SF was my principal stimulation).
Science fiction’s lost its appeal over the
years but even now I’ll occasionally take
a punt on a recommended SF movie. The trouble
is, and I think it was Dick that voiced this complaint
recently, that I’m living in a world which
in many respects owes its style to SF writers’
and SF movie-makers’ vision and it’s
a bit of a disappointment – not so much
because they were wrong, but because very often
they were right.’
Some of you will remember my own SF gambit with
the ‘rock opera’ The Jellabad
Mutant. Rock opera is in parentheses because
it never really developed beyond the draft stage,
for which nobody is to blame in particular. The
reported position of EMI that they were ‘awash
with rock operas’ subsequent to the success
of Peter Townsend’s Tommy is as
good as reason as any. I’m not even sure
that TJM is that original given that
it’s possible I read the Ray Bradbury story
The Martian Chronicles (maybe even in
Analog Science Fact & Fiction), which
has a very similar premise.. read

Dick's
Toolbox - Animals
There are people who have
pets, and there are people with animals. There
are fewer and fewer who require animals to, and
for, work ……. and there are a only
a minority that prefer the company of people.
Animals are not always as demanding as people
and are a lot less intellectually complicated.
Politicians can converse as equals with them as
they do with babies. To be honest - how many loved
ones would be happy with just having their hair
brushed, a tin of pet food, bowl of water and
de-flea-ing? Excepting pensioners of course
It is obvious that the animal companionship satisfies
a deep primal need for many people; the existence
of dogs in all their variegated breeds and peculiarities
demonstrates this perfectly. They show the interdependent,
synergistic (perhaps parasitic) relationship that
has evolved both shape and nature over the past
fifteen thousand years from the wolf to the domestic
dog. Over that time we see a rapid evolution of
the.. read
