Mike's
Pith & Wind -
Power to the people..
Matty paused after he’d delivered
the slice of toasted gluten-free fruit loaf
to our table. ‘Cool phone you’ve
got there Mike’, he said.
I recognised the intended irony, but thanked
him anyway. I mean, I drive a Mitsubishi
Express van for goodness sake, so I’m
clearly not a bloke who cares too much about
what people think about the brand of my
car or mobile phone for that matter.
Anyway, what’s wrong with my mobile
phone? Nokia used to be a fashionable brand
and you weren’t anyone unless you
owned a Nokia, but now it is despised and
considered ‘girly’.
Nevertheless, my Nokia does what I need
it to do i.e. it makes phone calls
and takes serviceable photos. It could also
connect me to the Internet but I choose
not to use that facility as the screen is
quite tiny and it’s got a cowl-shaped
blotch on it from an unfortunate encounter

whilst away from home, but finally decided
to get a Notebook.. read

Dick's
Toolbox - Classical music
One of the great pleasures
of my life is silence, the complete absence
of man-made cacophony. And I mean not just
the ceaseless pounding of music, jangling
commentary and shock jock prognostications
but also the constant visual bombardment
of advertising, neon lights and traffic
warnings. But silence of all kinds is increasingly
hard to find when you are out and about
in a car, in a city, or when going shopping
on foot.
Was it always thus?
Let us start with the car. The latest vehicles
of even quite humble origins – your
average Ford Focus as an example –
has an entertainment centre that connects
your phone, iPad or media player which you
search and play the music you want using
simple voice commands. Lordy, Lord imagine
that when the average punter has sixty-four
Gigabytes of random noise to choose from
