Apart from Julia Gillard and Gina Rinehart there aren’t too many Australian women in positions of power that are household words, so a shift in the balance of power in the battle of the sexes is more of an uneasy suspicion than an everyday reality. Not that I’ve ever had a problem with females in authority, being brought up in my younger years by my hairbrush-wielding (with the riding crop in reserve) mother and grandmother.
Ed Nimmervoll’s been telling me for years that the boys have had their day in the pop music sphere and that these days it’s almost the exclusive domain of female song writers and performers. I can’t say that I’ve been following the current trends in pop music, but I will concede that Sheryl Crow’s line from If It Makes You Happy (If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad. If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad?) is one of the more telling truths about the male condition that makes me simply want to slink away and sleep for a decade especially when screamed out in defiant unison by a bunch of sloshed females standing on chairs waving their wine bottles around.
I’ve long since vacated the pop arena, so it hardly matters if women have occupied it to the almost total exclusion of males – by and large they’re just playing the corporate game whatever their sex or their motives. It’s when it starts impacting on my TV viewing that I sit up and take notice, albeit blinking in confusion and scratching my arse as I do. read more
