Pith & Wind - Heat
When it’s really, really cold, well,
these days I just switch on the heating,
but before I had the heating and even now
when I’m trying to be Spartan and
refrain from turning it on until I absolutely
have to, I think to myself that it’s
quite impossible to work when it’s
too cold, much harder than when it’s
too hot. That’s until it gets too
hot, of course. Today was too hot by quite
some margin and everything went on hold
until I finally relented and turned on the
cooling – and within a few minutes
my mind refocused and I was able to get
something constructive done.
When you think about it, it seems we humans
seem to best operate within a pretty narrow
temperature range and yet, as a species
we inhabit just about all the various climatic
regions on the planet. What’s more,
it would appear the hardy races that live
in the Arctic regions and in the Himalayas
actually prefer to live in the cold and
the desert peoples living near the equator
seem to thrive in extreme heat.
I was going to say that it’s the hot
desert people that are responsible for all
the world’s great religions, but then
I remembered Buddhism and the ascetic prophets
in caves atop mountains and so I can conclude
satisfyingly that it’s deserts of
both persuasions that seem to drive nutty
blokes closer to God. Not that God hasn’t
spoken to nutty females, but we’ve
been less inclined to listen to them on
the whole.
