I’ve got a house full of CDs, a fact I don’t think would surprise anyone, but I’m rarely in the mood to listen to any of them. (As I write this I can hear Jewel (live) in the background on ABC2 being so thoroughly and obnoxiously incompetent that I’ll have to go and put her out of her misery. Hold on a second.. Back to the cricket in Delhi, just in time for the lunch break – O the manifold joys of Foxtel).
When I drive I most often find myself listening to News Radio, followed closely by ABC Classic FM. Classical music really works well when you’re driving. You’ve no doubt noticed that in many movies it’s fashionable to choose a serene piece of classical music to accompany a driving interlude, particularly in thrillers. I had exactly that situation when I found myself driving through the Domain tunnel on the way to Kyneton last week to just such a serene clarinet piece – and for a few minutes I imagined I was in my own movie, feeling curiously detached as a result. Mind you, it only really works if all other noise is removed from your personal sound track, and driving my Mitsubishi van doesn’t really afford me silent running at the best of times. In fact, the van is so prodigiously noisy at its top speed I’m considering using noise-cancelling headphones next time I travel any distance and see if that helps reduce the raging tinnitus with which I inevitably arrive at my destination.

Dick's Toolbox - Quiet please
For most of the time that humans have been wandering, somewhat aimlessly, about this blue and pleasant planet it has been a quiet and tranquil place; the forests, plains and deserts echoing faintly with the sounds of various life forms tip-toeing about their business. And, except for the occasional asteroid impact and erupting volcano, it was only in the mating season when there were cries of ecstasy, outbreaks of giggling and other loud comments on the basic absurdity of the various positions adopted, that things moved above a low murmur.
