Touting
for work on home turf
28.5.09 - I probably should've
done this a long time ago, but you know how it is - you treasure
your anonymity on your home turf. My butcher, Shaun, (pic)
tumbled me a long time back, so I wasn't losing anything there,
and I thought it might help in getting my name around as a local
harmonica teacher if I could put a flyer up in his window, so
I approached him today as I bought my routine chicken schnitzel.
He was more than happy to help out, and asked for another couple
of flyers to put up at the footy club. Well, the possibilities
are endless, but I've long-since learned not to expect too much
from the humble flyer. |

Ann
& Dan in town 19.5.09
- Even though it was noted on my Outlook, I was taken by surprise
when I got a text from Ann yesterday saying they (she and Dan)
were in town, despite the GPS in their hire car complicating
what must be the simplest drive known to man from Tullamarine
to the city.
I duly contacted Dick and we both managed to arrive at the Quay
West apartments at the same time this morning and we all wandered
down the Yarra till we found a suitably non-descript café
in which to sit and chat. (pic)
I managed to meet Ann & Dan again in St Kilda for a pleasant
lunch - after seeing Ian McCausland and before trotting down
to Edensound to complete my mastering agenda. Weeks of nothing,
then it all happens at once.. |

The
week that led to the non-event weekend
18.5.09 - I wasn't expecting Syl
and his sister Liz (pic 1) to be coming on the trip
to Montsalvat and beyond with Margaret and me last Thursday
morning, but it was nice to have them on board anyway. The bushfire
exhibition had come down, as had Dean Jones' exhibition, so
there wasn't much in the way of art to look at, but we all had
fun exploring the fairyland that is Montsalvat, finishing up
with a bite to eat at the café.
From there it was but a short drive to the Heide Gallery in
Templestowe where we enjoyed the Australian Modernist exhibition.
I got yellow-carded for taking a pic of Percy Grainger's 'natural'
synthesiser, which put me in mind of including WHY's paean to
Percy on our Liberation Blue |
CD. I reckon it would sound great
with just a ukulele backing. Liberation Blue? I'm dreaming,
of course. Well, not just dreaming - Bill and I are actually
plotting to do a pre-emptive CD featuring acoustic as versions
of some of our vast catalogue of singles and other random tracks
(like Percy Grainger). But, before we get ahead of ouselves,
let's see how far we get with BST.. |

The
Cafarellas are back in town! 10.5.09
- While I'm still feeling guilty about all those disappointed
mums at the Dandy Workers Club, ('an oxymoron if ever I heard
one', sniffed Trevor Leeden), the social calender has been awash
with familial assignations coinciding the arrival in Melbourne
of more Cafarellas than you can shake a stick at. Kath suggested
that I come over for tea with Marg and Syl last Wednesday evening,
and then there was the hastily arranged invitation for Chris
and I to attend the engagement party yesterday at the Elwood
Sailing Club for the eldest of the three Cafarella sons, Matt,
and his fiancée, Flick. (pic 1)
There was an M & F theme for the party, so Chris came as
me, and I came as my father, or Morris Nylon depending
on my mood at the time. Most people seemed to arrive after 4.00,
and Chris and I had already been there for a couple of hours,
so we bade our farewells at about 6.30 before the main part
of the night had even begun. No matter, we managed to have fun,
and there'll no doubt be more to come before Marg and Syl head
back to the moist climes of the Gold Coast on Wednesday. |

Leslie makes a suggestion.. |
Montsalvat
roundup
6.5.09 - I got a message on my answerphone
thingo from Sigmund Jörgensen on the weekend inviting me
to an 'end of function party' at Montsalvat's Barn Gallery for
6.00 last night. I had no idea what that meant, but I made sure
that I was free to attend anyway, just in case it might be fun.
So my day went thus: my guitar student failed to turn up at
midday, Bill came over at 1.00 and we taste-tested my latest
cauliflower soup, (thumbs up from Bill), before listening to
the revised rap on Sensible Shoes, (ditto), and I had
a session at 2.00 to put a harp line or two on a new Jo Kelly
Stephenson song that took me to 3.00, so I had some time left
over to visit Choclatté and have a hot chocolate and
read the paper.
I got to Montsalvat early, hoping that I'd be able to check
out Dean Jones' exhibition, but the Long Gallery had closed
at 5.00 so Sigmund gave me a glass of red to fill in the time.
I had a few more glasses when Leslie Avril (pic) arrived,
and we discussed at length the possibility of another gig at
Phillip Island for later in the |
year. Sigmund made a little speech
about how much money the exhibition and concert had made (all
the artworks were sold) and made sure we all left with a couple
of bottles of wine each - I got an extra bottle for arriving
early! So, that was a nice day, wasn't it? |
