October
The bits of stuff that fall in the cracks between Life, Music and Outrageous Fortune.

1) An unexpected pleasure to see John Schumann back in town 2) Hugh McDonald looks happy to see Mike as well
FIFO Road rehash gets Mike a harp guernsey
22.10.13 - It seems that answering the phone is somewhat of a lottery these days. I wasn't expecting to hear from John Schumann (pic 1) for instance, but that's what happened sometime yesterday and before I knew it I'd agreed to lay some Rudd harp on a track that John had first recorded with Mal Logan back in the '80s called FIFO Road. John sent me the original version per e-mail and I had fun throwing some licks on it today with John and Hugh McDonald's (pic 2) encouragement at Hugh's Kew studio.

1) Me and the birthday boy - all I need these days is one glass of bubbly 2) George, the star of the party, says bye byes
Syl's birthday bash
22.10.13 -
Syl's 72nd birthday was actually last Friday, but last night most of the Victorian chapter of the Burns' clan assembled at the Cafarella's joint for a birthday BBQ by way of a belated celebration. In keeping with my recent alcoholic austerity I had but the one flute of fizz (pic 1) but that was enough to get me going - in any case, I had to stay pretty alert to monitor Chris' appetites as he's been eating exceptionally well of late and last night was no exception. In the event, Maria's cheesecake got honourable mentions all round and everybody ate well. It was good to see Marie and Samuel Burns back on deck and gorgeous George (pic 2) did his reputation no harm even though he was visibly tiring when his parents made a strategic withdrawal.

1) Nick and Steve looking cute as two buttons in their shool uniforms 2) The point of the exercise becomes clear Choclatté does its bit for the girls of Sierra Leone
9.10.13 - The lads and lasses, including management at Choclatté, our favourite café in Camberwell, have been dressing bizarrely these last couple of weeks, but for a purpose. Adam probably told me why they got onto it in the first place but I've forgotten now. Anyhow they're raising money to send school-age girls in Sierra Leone to high school. Only one in six attends high school now, but for the $300.00 AUD per annum needed - and maybe the odd cultural objection. They've done really well so far and have invited me to perform there soon, perhaps even on Saturday the 19th. (I've forgotten that detail too). I'll update when I know more.
