1) Brian Cadd has a chat with the BV girls 2) Doug Brady pumps up the playback for John Grant, Brian and Coxy
A night in the reel world..
27.3.13 - It was when I arrived in Canberra a week or two back I turned on my phone and found the message from Brian Cadd inviting me to give him a call. It turns out that he and Amanda have relocated to Melbourne after some years living in Byron and Brian's taking the opportunity to do some recording with the Bootleg Family Band at Doug Brady's new studio in Abbotsford. I'm not sure of the scope of the recording, but Brian invited me to play some harp on one track at least, so on Tuesday night I turned up with a brace of harps in hand ready for any eventuality. I was introduced to Gus, the diminutive Kiwi bass-player and to the BV girls (pic 1) whose names I immediately forgot, and reacquainted myself with John Grant, Tony Naylor and Coxy (Geoff Cox) who endeared himself to me by calling me Bill Putt all night.
The recording MO was simple - run the song through and then record a few passes, all live to hard disc via Dougie's treasured Neve desk. There was a team of camera-persons flitting about too, so if all goes according to plan there might be something up on YouTube with me in it sometime in the future.
By the time we'd done all that it was 9.00 and I was starving, so I reluctantly slipped out into the balmy night air as Coxy launched into yet another tall tale..

1) Marie and Samuel celebrate their combined birthdays last Sunday 2) Prince George steals the show as the girls chat
The Burns' birthday party
14.3.13 - It was too darn hot to be scooting around Eltham to find a bottle shop - but that 's what Chris and I were doing at 1.30 on Sunday, an hour after the advertised start of the Burns' shebang celebrating Marie's 50th and Samuel's 17th birthdays. (pic 1) Most of the rel's were in attendance, including Syl, much to Chris' delight. The mood amongst the Baby Boomers was a little subdued due to the oppressive heat, but the kids soon had that sorted with a water pistol fight that lasted most of the afternoon. Prince George Cafarella arrived late in proceedings but still managed to steal the show with just a regal stretch or two and a sleepy nod in the direction of his bottle. (pic 2)
