Mike's Pith & Wind - Cultural difference
I remembered at 8.30 this morning that I hadn’t
any bread. Not just any bread, mind you. I prefer – nay, insist
on - a sourdough loaf. My local Pantry gets but one of these precious
items a day, and there is fierce competition for its wholesome goodness
between an anonymous local woman and me. The Pantry’s owner,
Tim, (real name Tam, according to the certificate on the wall),
advises me constantly I should get there earlier, but he must be
telling this female highwaywoman the same thing, ‘cause the
critical time is getting earlier and earlier.
Anyway, I missed out again today, and as I trudged home emptyhanded,
I wondered what topic I might turn my attention to this Pith &
Wind. As I heated up my porridge I disconsolantly flopped down in
front of the telly and flicked it on. There was a programme on I
hadn’t seen before. It was an American show (surprise!) featuring
one of the more generously proportioned female leads from a show,
the name of which eludes me, that was popular in the ‘90s.
I got the feeling that this new vehicle was intended as a spoof
on JAG, because it was called DAG.
Well, bang goes that name for an Australian sitcom I suppose, but
it occurred to me that ‘dag’ doesn’t have the
connotations in the US that it does here – in truth, it doesn’t
have any connotations at all in the States. One might just assume
that DAG was a spoof on JAG in the States, whereas here in Oz you’d
have to think twice.
It was in the Nation Review many years ago that somebody noticed
