Mike
Rudd's No. 9
The
name was inspired by The Beatles's enigmatic song of the
same name, but it had actual relevance to Bill and me
as it was the ninth band name that we'd had since the
inception of Spectrum - or The Spectrum, as it
was originally.
The Troubadour in Brunswick St Fitzroy (pic)
was a very special gig for us at the time (1984) and there
were some interesting combinations of players who guested
with Messrs Rudd and Putt. Bill had moved away from the
bass guitar and divided his time between the electric
Fender (Squier I think) and his trusty nylon acoustics,
one of which was a downtuned slide, (tuned to an open
C), which was a truly innovative and amazingly effective
concept that he persisted with until his death in 2013..
One of those guests mentioned in this cutting was David
Krycer, who added the sound of his upright bass to the
largely nylon-strung guitar duo and realised a long-held
vision of mine. It sounded as sublime as I'd imagined
it would and David's enthusiasm added another positive
element to our performances at the Troubadour. Dasvid
contrive4d to make a recording of onr of our shows that
is somewhere in my collection. It was somewhat marred
by a pervasive hum from one of Bill's guitars as I recall,
but worth revisiting. |
